2019 Year in Review: Top 5 Blockbusters
2019 was a massive movie year, especially in the comic book world. In fact, according to Forbes, the Marvel Cinematic Universe earned more than $5 billion in revenue worldwide from its three major box office hits. From “Avengers: Endgame” to “The Lion King,” here are the top five blockbusters of 2019. And just in case you’ve been living under a screen-free rock, we didn’t disclose any plot spoilers.
Earning a whopping $350 million in its opening weekend at domestic box offices and $850 million in its entirety, “Avengers: Endgame” takes the title for the highest-grossing film of 2019. In the sequel to “Avengers: Infinity War,” the Avengers assemble once again to combat Thanos, reverse his devastating actions and restore balance to the universe. The star-studded cast includes Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Paul Rudd and many more.
The Lion King
Disney dominated in 2019 with its CGI remake of the cherished classic, “The Lion King.” Generating $540 million at the domestic box office, “The Lion King” captured the attention of audiences everywhere with its lifelike visual effects and powerful soundtrack. The film featured the popular voices of Beyoncé, Donald Glover, Seth Rogan, Billy Eichner and Keegan-Michael Key to bring our favorite childhood characters to life and retell Simba’s iconic journey.

Toy Story 4
Woody and Buzz Lightyear came back to the big screen in 2019 with Disney Pixar’s release of “Toy Story 4.” In the fourth installment of the series, Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the gang embark on a road trip adventure to reconnect with old friends and explore a world outside of their own. According to CBS News, “Toy Story 4” generated a worldwide $244 million opening day, the third-largest for an animated film.
A big year for Marvel Studios, “Captain Marvel” made box office history by becoming the first-ever female-led superhero film to generate more than $1 billion worldwide, according to CBS News. The box office hit is based around Carol Danvers, played by Brie Larson, as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful superheroes when Earth is caught in the middle of an intergalactic war.
Spider-Man: Far From Home
Comic book movies reigned in 2019 with the release of another blockbuster hit, “Spider-Man: Far From Home.” Picking up after the events from “Avengers: Endgame,” the film follows Spider-Man as he tries to stop new threats and four massive creatures from wreaking havoc across the continent. The film stars Tom Holland, Samuel L. Jackson and Jake Gyllenhaal and was the first Spider-Man movie to make more than $1 billion at the global box office, according to CNBC.
